I want to tell you about a great opportunity for your child as they begin their high school journey at Hilldale High School. The Hilldale Color Guard/Winter Guard is one of the premiere organizations on campus. According to many studies, students who participate in music and band have higher test scores. Even today college admissions continue to cite participation in music programs as an important factor in making admission decisions.
You may be asking yourself what is color guard and winter guard and what do they have to do with music and band? Allow me to answer that, color guard is equal parts sport and art. It is, in fact, described by its national organization as “The Sport of the Arts”. It allows students to grow both as athletes and as artists and allows students to express themselves in a brand new way.
In the fall, color guard combines dance, tumbling, acting, and use of equipment such as flags, mock rifles, mock Saber’s and air blades, to tell the story of the music that the band is playing. During the spring semester, these skills are taken indoors onto a gym floor. During both semesters your student will be involved in a competitive sport/art. In the fall, students perform at football games, and are allowed to compete in OSSAA solo and ensemble competition. In the spring, students compete against other winter guard groups across Oklahoma through the Oklahoma Winterguard and Percussion circuit and are able to compete in State contest for solo and ensemble.
Color Guard and Band are very tight knit communities that promote leadership, organizational skills, accountability, growth, fun and above all honor, integrity and friendship. It is my hope that your child will consider joining the Hilldale Crimson Vanguard Color Guard and Winterguard and start on a beautiful athletic and artistic journey with us. Students joining are not required to have any previous experience in any of the areas listed above. Please have your student fill out the attached form and we will make sure to get you all the information about joining us for the upcoming seasons!
