What is Title I?

Title I is a federally funded, supplemental program intended to assist students who are struggling in Math and Reading.  The goal of the Title I program is to assist students who are able to make gains in skill development and to promote a positive self-concept with a positive attitude toward learning.

The objective of the Title I Reading Program is to enhance the student’s reading skills at their instructional level by combining all language abilities to include speaking, writing, listening, and thinking.  Basic skill development is strongly emphasized.

The Title I Math program provides high-quality, researched based curriculum and instruction in a supportive and effective learning environment.  This enables the participating children to meet the  students academic standards.

We are SchoolwideTitle I school at both elementary sites and Targeted Assisted Title I at the middle school for reading and math.  Targeted-assisted means you provide assistance only to those students who qualify for the program by test score(s), teacher or parent referral, grades, etc.

A school wide program is a comprehensive reform strategy designed to upgrade the entire educational program in a Title I school.  Its primary goal is to ensure that all students, particularly those who are low-achieving, demonstrate proficient and advanced levels of achievement on state academic achievement standards.  This school wide reform strategy requires that a school-

  • Conduct a comprehensive needs assessment;

  • Identify and commit to specific goals and strategies that address those needs;

  • Create a comprehensive plan; and

  • Conduct an annual review of the effectiveness of the school wide program and revise the plan as necessary.

Whereas Title I targeted assistance programs only provide educational services to identified individual students, school wide program emphasis is on serving all students, improving all structures that support student learning, and combining all resources, as allowed, to achieve a common goal.  It is only a win-win situation for us and for all of our students.

Adopting this strategy should result in an ongoing, comprehensive plan for school improvement that is owned by the entire school community and tailored to its unique needs.
